Welcome to St. Michael Lutheran Church

Our nature and mission are derived from the life and work of Jesus Christ.  Our purpose is to nourish members through the preaching and teaching of the Word, administration of the sacraments, mutual support, and an inclusive fellowship. We are centered in Lutheran liturgical worship which cherishes Word and Sacrament and celebrates music as God’s gift for “expressing the inexpressible.”

We are a loving and accepting church, providing a safe and welcoming environment for all to come and worship God.  We have a strong and proud history of serving our community, and these areas of ministries remain central to our congregation today.

When you come visit us on Sunday mornings, you will find a vibrant congregation full of life.  Our littlest Lutherans fill up the front of the sanctuary to hear a children's sermon each Sunday.  Young adults and living saints mutually enjoy our traditional style of worship, and everyone takes delight in the hymns and music led by our senior organist and full choir.  We hope you will join us to discover why so many people call St. Michael Lutheran Church home!

St. Michael Lutheran Church is a proud member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with about 4 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  As an inclusive church, we believe God gives us our unity in Christ, and we are able to see and respect the diversity within Christ’s body. We receive it as a gift and embrace it, rather than treating it as a threat or a problem to be solved.

A Servant Church

St. Michael Lutheran Church members use their skills, leadership, time, monies, talents, and passions to support many different charities and causes in our Greenville community.  Through a partnership with Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN), SMLC has two transitional homes on its campus for families to live in while transitioning into their own home.  Our Shawl Ministry knits blankets for those in Hospice care, our Summer Sunday School focuses on community outreach, and every fall we join with our neighbors of ARCUM to run a pumpkin patch, with proceeds benefiting Greenville area charities.

Backpack Buddies

In February 2012, Saint Michael Lutheran Church partnered with a well known program in our community called Backpack Buddies.  Many children in our community are sent home from school at the end of each week with little or no food until the following school day.  These children are on “free or reduced breakfast and lunch” programs at school, but go home on the weekends with little or no food to eat.  The teachers and administrators at the school identify children who they know are in need of this service. The child-friendly and nutritious food is sent home in backpacks that look just like the other kids’, so that they are not embarrassed to carry the food home. The backpacks are then returned and refilled for the next Friday. By providing these food-filled backpacks, we are able to provide these children with the nutrition they need to play, learn, grow, and just be kids.  SMLC has partnered with two local schools to provide food for children each week.
